About
Hi, this is Jat Laam (previously publishing as Yinan Yao).
I am a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center. My research examines how legal and institutional classifications shape belonging, mobility, and inequality. I study these questions primarily in the context of migration and legal status, while also exploring how work–family arrangements and gendered labor markets structure life chances across the life course.
Methodologically, I combine quantitative analysis of large-scale data, survey and conjoint experiments, and qualitative interviews to understand how people interpret and respond to institutional categories in everyday life.
